README

The SIG Sauer P226 is a double-stack 9mm variant of the Swiss Army's P220, developed to compete for the US Army contract in 1985. It narrowly lost to the Beretta 92FS on price, but ended up winning contracts for many special forces units around the world, including the Navy Seals and the British SAS. It is generally considered to be one of the best overall combat pistols.

This ain't worky, damn it wild

The Navy SEALs were the first to notice a small problem with their new Beretta M9 pistols. Sometimes the slide would explode in their faces. [REDACTED] while they were [REDACTED] resulting in minor injuries. After two more incidents like that, the teams had had enough. They didn't mind the cool scars, but they only transitioned to sidearms when Plans A, B, C, and D have already failed, and the last thing they need at that point is more problems. When the SEALs ask for something, it's generally wise to say yes, so they were promptly issued a replacement: the SIG Sauer P226. There aren't that many Frogmen, so this was a tiny contract for Sig Sauer, but a huge marketing opportunity. The 226 now had a reputation as a high-end pistol suitable for elite forces around the world, including the British SAS and Israeli Sayeret, and that led to widespread adoption by law enforcement and civilians. SIG even started selling civilians the custom model that they made for the SEALs, the mk25, which includes extra saltwater resistance and the Navy anchor symbol on the slide.

The SIG Sauer P226 is as neutral as the country that designed it. Combining the best design ideas of pistols from both sides of World War 2. Swiss mechanical engineer, Charles Petter studied Browning's 1911 design, and found a way to simplify it in a way that improved accuracy and reliability, while reducing manufacturing cost. SIG was impressed by this design and bought his patent in 1937 to use in the SIG P210. Now at around the same time, Sauer was working on their first pistol for Nazi officers, the double action Sauer 38H, which was the first pistol to ever include a decocking lever. When SIG merged with Sauer, they combined the Browning Petter firing system from the SIG P210 with the decocking lever and double action trigger of the Sauer 38H to create the SIG Sauer P220, a modern, single-stack .45 that won over many fans of the old 1911. When the Americans sent out the call for the XM9 trials, it was fairly simple to switch out the single-stack .45 magazine for a double-stack 9mm.

SEAL training not included.

Sidenote: I'm aware that the hammer is incorrectly positioned. But I guess you could always argue that the hammer is decocked at all times.
